Bad Dental Hygiene Habits to Avoid

We have noticed that there are several bad dental hygiene habits that many people share. Because of this, we would like to address these things and offer solutions. Our dentist and team are always willing to provide dental hygiene tips to help you improve your oral health.

Time Spent Brushing

Did you know that most people do not brush their teeth for long enough? The average person brushes their teeth for about 45 seconds, but we suggest that you brush your teeth for a full two minutes, twice daily.

Brushing Pressure

Some people brush their teeth harder than they need to. You may think that this is harmless, but it can actually harm the tooth enamel and the gums. Make an effort to brush using gentle pressure to protect your teeth and gums.

Brushing After Meals

Brushing after you eat is a good idea, but brushing immediately after is often not. This is especially true if you ate something acidic, like soda or lemons. In this case, the tooth enamel would be weakened right after you eat. Because of this, we recommend that you wait about 30 minutes before brushing. Drinking water or chewing sugarless gum can help clean the mouth a little while you wait.

Toothbrush Storage

If you store your toothbrush in an enclosed place, don’t. Your toothbrush should be stored upright in the open air so that germs can’t grow on it as easily.

Toothbrush Bristles

Using a toothbrush with hard bristles can wear down the enamel of the teeth. Because of this, our dentist in Little Rock, Arkansas, suggests that you use a soft-bristled toothbrush.
